Watiya Tjuta Tree – Wool 30x40cm Cushion Cover by Mitjili Napurrula

Description

Artwork

Mitjila paints the Watiya Tjuta tree. Mitjila’s style is unique and recognisable. The Watiya Tjuta in Mitjila’s paintings is her father’s Tjukurrpa (dreaming) in Llyingaungau Country (Gibson Desert). This was passed down to her by her mother, Tjunkayi Napaltjareri when story telling, using the same draw story as it is told in the Traditional way. She remembers, “after I got married, my mother taught me my father’s Tjukurrpa in the sand, that’s what I’m painting on the canvas’, a women’s interpretation”.

Cross Cultural Project

These cushion designs combine original artwork from Australian Aboriginal artists with the fine quality handicrafts from the remote Himalayan region of Kashmir.

The hand chain stitched cushion covers are made in Kashmir by small craft based enterprises in a cross-cultural project with Australian Indigenous artists. Australian and New Zealand wool is custom dyed to match the original artist’s image and hand stitched onto a cotton base. Each cushion is backed with cotton canvas and closes with a zip.

Please note: Cushion fillers are not included and as the cushions are hand stitched each design has unique variations.
